The "Coca-Cola Route" — Kilimanjaro's oldest, gentlest path, and the only one with huts instead of tents. Climbed over 6 days.

Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s oldest and most established route, nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route,” and the only one where you sleep in huts rather than tents. Its gentle, direct path makes it the easiest route on the mountain — but easy terrain doesn’t mean easy acclimatization. I climbed it over 6 days, and that extra time at Horombo made a real difference.
Camp by camp
Chilly evenings
Dormitory huts (60 bunks), communal dining hall, flush toilets — though in practice small and kept to very different standards from one to the next.
Saw black-and-white colobus monkeys with long, bushy tails on the walk in. By evening, a light headache had already started — worth knowing this can happen even this low on the mountain.
Cold nights, sunny days
The largest hut on the route (120 bunks), dining hall — and a big, clean toilet facility with running water, a clear step up from Mandara.

My favorite camp on the whole route. Spent two nights here — the extra night is what makes this the 6-day itinerary instead of 5. On the rest day, hiked out to Zebra Rocks for acclimatization and came back to camp the same day: a light, easy day, exactly what the 5-day version skips.
Well below freezing at night
60 bunks — but no running water service at all, and the dry (long-drop) toilets were dirty and smelly. A noticeable drop in comfort from Horombo.

Final stop before the summit push.
